848 Naval Air Squadron was a squadron of the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. It operated the Westland Sea King HC.4 helicopter and previously provided advanced flying training to pilots for the other squadrons in the Commando Helicopter Force. The squadron was based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset and was decommissioned on 24 March 2016. [1]

848 Naval Air Squadron was formed at Quonset Point (Rhode Island), USA on 1 Jun 1943, working up with Avengers for torpedo bombing and reconnaissance. After action during D-Day it served eventually with the Pacific Fleet. After the end of the Pacific war, it disbanded at Devonport, near Plymouth on 31 Oct 1945.

Jun 11, 2021 · 848 Naval Air Squadron was first established in 1943 equipped with Avenger aircraft, but was disbanded after the war. In October 1952, the Squadron was re-commisioned with the new Whirwind helicopter for anti-terrorist protection duties in Malaya, becoming the first operational Royal Navy Whirlwind Squadron.

The squadron was officially formed in June 1943 as a torpedo bomber reconnaissance Avenger squadron at NAS Quonset Point, and subsequently embarked on HMS Trumpeter in October 1943 for the UK.
