Aug 19, 2010 · Buying a low hour motor like someone else already mentioned is a nice idea, however i dont know how to get an entire engine in and out of my sport fish without stripping the motor down to the block. Heads, turbos, coolers etc all have to come off to remove the motor without cutting up the boat.

Aug 19, 2010 · The detroit diesel dealers here charge around $112-116 an hour per mechanic from the moment they leave their shop. Think of how many hours (for 2 guys) and trips to the boat there are when doing an in-frame rebuild.....the bill adds up very quick.

Mar 3, 2009 · But 400hrs since rebuild should still give you years and years of enjoyment. Total hours (6000) is kind of meaningless for the most part. I would highly recommend hiring a good engine surveyor to examine them, and report on current condition and what he thinks they will go before purchasing the vessel.

Feb 29, 2008 · So my conclusions are 1) smoke at cold start is a good indicator of wear and remaining life; 2) the bearings and other internal parts are not particularly failure prone, compared with other mfg engines; 3) high horsepower diesel engines produce a lot of heat when running hard, and the heat transfer capacity of the J&T cooling system is marginal ...

Feb 29, 2008 · The initial design of the 2 stroke detroit diesel was from WW2 they ended up building 4 series the 53 series, the 71 series, the 92 series, and the 149 series. They were intended to be a high power low weight easily maintained engine. They were also intended to be disposable and low cost.
