In 1987, Roger Penske took over Detroit Diesel, and one of the first things he tackled was to put an end to the marinizing of Detroits by S&S, J&T, et al., in favor of what he called "box engines" or 'out of the box' from the Factory...no more oddities like aluminum exhaust manifolds(!) out of NJ or hyper HP motors out of TX.

Jul 8, 2010 · According to the DDC book, total capacity on a 8V-92 TA 735 BHP marine engine is 27.5 quarts with filter. At a zero-degree installation angle, less filter, High is 25.4 qts. and Low is 18.5 qts. Max installation angle is 15 deg. Oil flow is 39 gal. per min.

Aug 19, 2010 · Buying a low hour motor like someone else already mentioned is a nice idea, however i dont know how to get an entire engine in and out of my sport fish without stripping the motor down to the block. Heads, turbos, coolers etc all have to come off to remove the motor without cutting up the boat.

Aug 19, 2010 · The detroit diesel dealers here charge around $112-116 an hour per mechanic from the moment they leave their shop. Think of how many hours (for 2 guys) and trips to the boat there are when doing an in-frame rebuild.....the bill adds up very quick.

I would highly recommend hiring a good engine surveyor to examine them, and report on current condition and what he thinks they will go before purchasing the vessel.
