My mother’s accent was pure Mobile genteel while my father had a more neutral rural south AL accent. I suspect that my father’s accent was refined over the years, service in the Army and college then working in the medical field. Most people in Mobile speak with a "Gulf Southern" accent. It's not as distinctive as Appalachian (spoken guess where). Gulf Southern has things like the pen-pin merger and dropping of "r's." Sometimes "th" sounds come out as "d's". It's spoken in South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, and some of Louisiana and Texas.

I have a hard time recognizing it as a regionally specific accent, especially if they’ve lived outside of Alabama for any amount of time. Most Mississippians don’t have the same accent as rich Mississippians who still speak with the stereotypical plantation owner accent you’d hear in Gone With The Wind.
