Astarion and Eleanor (Tav, F Drow) go to the Lovers' Ball to celebrate their love. Since it's Eleanor's first ball, Astarion wants to give his all to make this night extra special for her. He spent months preparing a special surprise and teaching Eleanor how to waltz.

It isn't a justification, and I doubt Astarion was a great human being before turning, but I think theres space for a partial redemption arc if Tav can convince Astarion to put in the work and not emulate Cazador.

If you let Astarion ascend, you confirm his belief, that he isn't good enough as he is. As for why he insists on making Tav his Spawn, I think one reason is the possessiveness and since you confirmed that power is the most important thing, he wants to hold power over Tav.
