Sep 22, 2022 · Compared to 1990s-2000s drives and older, the Exo x16 14tb is really quiet. The Ironwolf 4tb is the most silent (nas-) HDD I have. WD Red 3tb (CMR) is between them.

Aug 5, 2020 · At the end of the day, the best (powered on) storage are hard drives in a RAID array with ECC ram, combined with online storage. The best powered off storage is tape or optical, but those are a hassle, so I'm willing to deal with a reliable hard drive used as backup + refreshing the hard drive sectors every christmas so that it doesn't bit rot.

May 1, 2021 · From my research I have found that higher quality HGST drives, WD Red, Black and Gold drives are all the best bang for buck at a 3.5 inch size. Whereas, the 2.5 inch drives are restricted at 1 TB for some reason and cost slightly more.
