May 3, 2012 · Type 1 - properly a blank - as cut from the rolled metal sheets Type 2 - properly a planchet - has been run through the upsetting mill to create a proto-rim. They are not uncommon - the mint even included them several years ago to fill the extra spot in mint sets (somebody will remember the year(s)).

A "planchet" has been through the upset mill and has raised rims, ready for striking (you may also see this sometimes called a Type II Blank). A "slug" is a garden pest with a low tolerance to salt.

Anyway, we found what appear to be blank coin planchets(?) within an old jewelry box among the contents found within a storage locker auction unit.

But rather, where one side looks as if it was just punched out of the alloy sheet - it's completely flat with no concavity or raised rims.

Jul 14, 2015 · The OP's coin is an obverse so let's say the mint employee put a blank slightly smaller than a quarter over the anvil die, then a quarter planchet over that and then stamped the pair. The excess diameter of the quarter would squeeze past the lower, smaller disc and would produce a quarter with a full rim, a full obverse and a blank reverse.

Mar 26, 2015 · The other thing that could be a possibility here is that its a world coin blank, again making it impossible to determine its origin. But, @SorenCoins says its at least 2 grams on his scale, he says he can see the zinc and steel layers, it's completly plausible that it's a 1943 steel cent blank that didn't make it to the upsetting mill.

Nov 5, 2009 · Rimming a blank helps smooth the surfaces of nicks and grooves, evenly distributes the metal for a proper strike, and creates the upset edge around the outside face of the coin, which is useful for a number of reasons. (Note that in precise terms, the metal disk is known as a blank before rimming, and it becomes a planchet after rimming.)

Nov 14, 2017 · Measure it beside another same type nickel 99.9% sure its been grinded down on 1 side. I had a similiar foreign coin. Im positive it will will be smaller thickness than the test coin because of one side being grinded down. Chris

Mar 6, 2010 · The Rim is the upturned or raised edge of the coin. All US coins have raised rims which serve to protect the design and facilitate stacking. Once blanks are punched they get heated in an annealing oven and then sent through an upsetting mill. The upsetting mill rolls the coin through an area that gets smaller in diameter than the blank.
