  1. The Constitution of the State of Colorado is the foundation of the laws and government of the state of Colorado. The current, and only, Colorado State Constitution was drafted March 14, 1876, approved by Colorado voters July 1, 1876, and took effect upon the statehood of Colorado on August 1, 1876. It has been amended several times since then.

    The Colorado Constitution creates the framework of the state’s government. It was written and ratified in 1876. It is the state’s original and only constitution. Like the US Constitution, the Colorado Constitution divided the government into three branches. The executive, legislative, and judicial would check and balance each other’s power.
