At the end he lets go of her you can tell because she reaches up her hands to hug him. (she was the "drug candy" that he couldn't get rid of. No matter how much she ruined his life.) And the wife looked depressed I don't remember her smiling at all. Most depressing ending I have ever encountered in fiction.
