Eugène Louis Boudin (French: [budɛ̃]; 12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores.

From the outset, Boudin’s work is marked by his desire to paint the actual scene before his eyes, and not to impose imaginative elements; thus, he attempts to translate the ever-changing spectacle of the skies and clouds racing over the sea directly into pastel, watercolour or oil.

Ever prolific — he created over 4,000 paintings and more than 7,000 watercolours, drawings and pastels — Boudin advanced a new type of landscape painting, one that was fundamentally tied to contemporary life.

Dec 11, 2000 · Boudin made careful study of these pennants, as attested by three extant pastel drawings and a related oil painting at the Musée d’Orsay.
