QUESTION ON WWII GARRISON CAPS - UNIFORMS - U.S. Militaria …
Aug 19, 2007 · The garrison cap terminology was official throughout WWII (and beyond) although the overseas cap name never entirely disappeared from popular use (along with several more colorful names for this style of cap). I believe that the Army's black beret has preempted this question (for now) but I still have my garrison cap in reserve.

The comment was made, to which I also agree, that the "airborne" garrison cap is among the most highly faked caps in the field of U.S. collecting. Due to the fact that if one has an airborne patch, and a garrison cap, one can easily sew the patch to the hat and call it golden.

One lists WWI overseas cap piping for officers (enlisted mens' caps were plain, without piping) and the other lists WWII garrison cap piping for both officers and enlisted soldiers (on pages 540 and 542, respectively).

USMC Garrison Cap with Red Trim - U.S. Militaria Forum
Jan 22, 2025 · I found this garrison cap a few years ago in a local antiques market. I have never seen a USMC cap like it, especially with the red trim. No idea if it is genuine USMC or something just put together. There is a Jacob Reed's Sons Philadelphia label and has the hand printed name Bob Fleck in two locations. Any input would be appreciated.

Dec 9, 2008 · With the advent of the new pattern "garrison caps" in the late 1930s, the Army evidently had rethought the cap piping issue and in 1940 officers were officially required to wear a metallic colored braid and enlisted men retained the branch colored piping on their garrison caps. Emerson also provides detailed tables of WWI and WWII piping colors.

Branch Piping Color for Officer's Garrison Caps
Feb 9, 2007 · This was during the period before the Army officially added officers' rank insignia to the left curtain of the garrison cap, replacing the DI. The images appear to show a branch-colored cloth disk (felt, I think, but possibly embroidered or even twill) about 2 inches in diameter, much like the airborne cap insignia.
