Dec 23, 2013 · Gero Onsen Gassho Village (Gassho Mura) comprises 10 thatched A-frame long-houses from nearby Shirakawa-go that have been re-assembled on the hill top site just outside Gero.

Shirakawa-go Ogimachi is the largest hamlet of gassho-zukuri style houses in Japan. The name gassho-zukuri literally means "like praying hands." Each house is a masterpiece of carpentry. They are built without nails—every beam slots neatly into the next.

There is no shortage of things to do, whether it's enjoying a Shirasagi-za Shadow Play, dining in an authentic gassho-zukuri thatched roof home, trying your hand at painting designs onto pottery or making Japanese washi paper. Located just above town is the Gassho Village (Gero Onsen Gassho Mura), an open air museum of gasshozukuri farmhouses, traditional steep roofed houses from the Shirakawago region. Here you can view the houses, see performances or participate in traditional folk art.

Visiting the Onsen gassho village in the hotsprings town of Gero is one way to see traditional Japan of the past.
