Glenwood Cemetery
Houston’s historic Glenwood Cemetery was founded in 1871 as a picturesque garden style cemetery. Glenwood derives its historical significance from its origins in the cemetery park movement of the 19th century and its extensive collection of historical monuments and statuary.
1880s | Glenwood Cemetery
In 1886, J.C. Hutcheson succeeded W.B. Botts as president. Under Hutcheson’s leadership, a new set of rules and regulations as well as a permanent trust fund were established. What is believed to be the first engineered map of the cemetery was drawn and eventually recorded in the Harris County Clerk’s office.

1870s | Glenwood Cemetery
Glenwood Cemetery was established as a private cemetery in 1871 by the Houston Cemetery Company, which was incorporated by an act of the Twelfth Legislature of the State of Texas on May 12, 1871. It was built on a site with distinguishing natural features and opened as the first rural garden cemetery in Texas.
