On a side project while waiting for the 3D-prints i also built the simple cube version. A laser cutter is used for cutting both acrylic spy mirrors as well as diffusor plates for the icosahedron and the frame for the cube, while a 3D-printer is used for the frame of the icoshaedron and stands.

So, the light from the LEDs bounces around inside the icosahedron off of the mirrored surfaces, but you can still see through those surfaces to get a view of the kaleidoscope-like display. To create your own, you’ll need access to both a 3D printer and a laser cutter.
