
Muddy Water Initiative
Feb 26, 2025 · We are a direct action, advocacy and educational clearinghouse for Boston’s Muddy River. Environmentalists, stakeholders, and stewards of the Muddy River, we pilot low-cost, community accessible, climate-resilient projects that keep our River clean and our communities healthy.
General 1 — Muddy Water Initiative
The Muddy River. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, the Muddy River connects a series of brooks and ponds that run through sections of Boston's Emerald Necklace, including the south boundary of Brookline. The Muddy River is part of the Emerald Necklace Project, built between 1880 and 1900.
Leadership - Muddy Water Initiative
Lisa is the Aquatic Scientist at Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), where she oversees all River Science water quality monitoring programs. She also contributes technical and community engagement skills to CRWA's watershed restoration and climate adaptation efforts.
Mission - Muddy Water Initiative
The Muddy Water Initiative is a grassroots environmental advocacy and action group committed to building community partnerships and serving as a clearinghouse for best practices to clean up the Muddy River.
WATERGOAT - Muddy Water Initiative
In 2019-2020, with the help of a state earmark, the Muddy Water Initiative researched, designed, and permitted a device called the WATERGOAT, a stormwater trash and debris boom that was deployed across the Muddy River at Ipswich Street in Boston on August 5, 2020.
Phosphorus Reduction Boom — Muddy Water Initiative
We designed an innovative new boom system to deploy this technology in a low-cost, minimally invasive way with no toxic byproducts to clean the Muddy River. Phosphorus is a pollutant that is a major contributor to cyanobacteria blooms and red tide in our waterways.

Charlesgate Farmers Market — Muddy Water Initiative
The Muddy Water Initiative hosted a farmers market at Charlesgate Park, which opened SUNDAY JUNE 23 through October 20, 2024. Neighbors, friends and fans came out for us at our NEW MARKET and enjoyed the bounty of Massachusetts’ local farms.
