Owens Valley Radio Observatory
The Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) is one of the largest university-operated radio observatories in the world. It is dedicated to research in radio astronomy and astrophysics, the training of the next generation of radio astronomers, the development of cutting-edge radio instrumentation.
History - OVRO
After much perseverance, they hired John Bolton to design Caltech's first radio telescope, to be built at the newly established Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). After John Bolton and Gordon Stanley built a prototype 32-foot telescope at Palomar, it was moved to OVRO in 1958.
Outreach - OVRO
The Owens Valley Radio Observatory offers monthly tours at the Observatory and annual lecture series in Bishop.

Projects — OVRO
The Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array images the Sun at 1-second cadence to obtain the radio spectrum at more than 400 frequencies in a broad frequency range (1-18 GHz). This unique combination of observational capabilities allows us to study the detailed processes that occur during solar flares--the largest explosions in the solar system ...
Directions — OVRO
Located southeast of Bishop, the Owens Valley Radio Observatory is 6 miles from the town of Big Pine. The only public access road to OVRO is via Highway 168, which begins at the northern end of Big Pine, by a large pine tree.
