  2. Sphagnum moss questions - Tortoise Forum

Jul 9, 2009 · Sphagnum is very acidic and accustomed to growing in very wet places so I have to believe that it is very mold resistant. Just about anything organic whether it be moss, mulch, soil, etc... can and will harbor mold, fungus, various bacterias and more not kept relatively free of wastes and if kept damp enough, long enough without proper airflow ...

  3. Sphagnum moss | Tortoise Forum

Oct 8, 2015 · Hi, I am interested in trying some sphagnum moss in my baby Hermann's hide as I've heard great things about it. I ordered the Spag-Moss brand from New Zealand that was recommended for this purpose and broke of a small square to let soak. Well, as promised, it expanded almost 20 times its size...

  4. My experience with sphagnum moss.. | Tortoise Forum

Mar 28, 2025 · I don't use sphagnum moss anymore and the reason is because, when i did have it the tortoise almost never went there and I made sure to mist the moss so it was humid. The three time I saw him there was for a brief curiosity and when I came back he was at the opposite side of the enclosure with sphagnum moss a mess inside the enclosure.

  5. Sphagnum moss or not - Tortoise Forum

Jul 19, 2016 · I say yes, as long as it non-colored, organic and not the stuff used for flower decorations it's fine to use. As a matter of fact, I use moistened sphagnum moss for my hide boxes for my young tortoises. If it's eaten some I don't worry because it passes through them no problem,(organic). Just keep it well fed and it should be no problem.

  6. Sphagnum Peat Moss - Tortoise Forum

May 31, 2014 · Peat moss is sphagnum moss decomposed. I use it as the the substrate mixed 50/50 with organic, none fertilized top soil. It holds moisture well, is acidic so no mold issues, and relatively inexpensive for the volume you get at most feed stores. If what you wanted was a fluffy moss for your humid hide, this won't work.

  7. Moss - Tortoise Forum

Jun 27, 2016 · Sphagnum moss is the most prominent type in tortoises enclosures. I see that moss in my garden but I have never used it in the tortoise cage. Until some more experienced member replies, I would stick with Sphagnum moss for now.

  8. sphagnum moss - Tortoise Forum

Oct 29, 2010 · It's like $4. I'm using that one as a temporary measure because my torts had parasites so I'm using this stuff in the meantime. (A big box of sphagnum moss from carolinapetsupply is waiting to be used after my torts get well ) That home depot moss has alot of twigs, etc that I usually just take out. But yeah, shouldn't be a problem

  9. moss or no moss - Tortoise Forum

Feb 20, 2016 · Moss! Definitely moss for the indoor enclosure works great for my babies. Only I've never use the stringy sphagnum moss. My choice is Frog Moss (fat clumps of soft pillowy moss) or sheet moss (in flat sheets shallowly dug out from where they grow) some seeds will sprout in the moss for my babies' munching pleasure. Now I only have 40 gal ...

  10. pros and cons on sphagnum peat moss | Tortoise Forum

Sep 13, 2009 · Pros and cons of long-fibered peat moss, like the Mosser Lee brand, in my experience: PROS-- Very acidic, not much cultures or grows in it - Not a growth medium, unlikely to sprout anything (it always amazes me how many things try to grow in my substrates when i am not using moss) - Good humidity retention when used properly
