The reason the Lord Ruler was 'immortal' was because of him being both an Allomancer and a Feruchemist (it was explained in the end of the first book, and explained again in AoL).

While we understood that the sword shard was the reason Ruin could speak to Spook we completely missed the connection that his ability to burn pewter came from the Thug!
