Aug 3, 2006 · Sapphire is denser than topaz so a 1ct sapphire will be smaller than a 1ct topaz (all other things like cut being equal). Sapphire has a higher refractive index and can have a higher lustre than topaz as a result. Sapphire is harder. Topaz is relatively clean and available in large sizes. Both can have distinctive types of inclusion.

Jan 6, 2006 · Most pink topaz is either surface treated or diffused some how. I don't think they are very durable. Sapphire is more durable with a higher refactive index. Spinel is another choice which IMO is the best choice because it seems to keep a better color in various lighting conditions and is all natural. Spinel is less expensive than sapphire also.

Dec 1, 2019 · The big problem with using any gem tester (I have the expensive Presidium) is its use is very limited. It can’t distinguish between lab grown material and natural from the earth. The gem testers are best for IDing say CZ vs other gemstones. On a presidium both sapphire and topaz have the same thermal signature.

Dec 5, 2018 · You can look up any gem for the Mohs hardness scale. The higher the number, the harder/more durable the stone. Diamond is a 10. I believe topaz is 8, zircon 7. That's not "only one level" It's a big difference. For a man's daily wear ring, I'd get topaz. And I agree with you on the swiss topaz. There's even a more striking "electric" blue topaz.
