It's expensive and has so much chlorine in it that I think it may actually hurt the lawn. I want to put in a sand point well but I have no idea what kind or size of pump/pressure tank to buy.

There is a good possibility your points have either corroded, closing off the steel mesh of the point, or fine sand/silt has clogged the sand/area around the outside of the point.
